Character Sprites and low-fi prototypes

Imagem
This week we focused on the low fidelity prototype and the tech feasibility one. We used colored cardboard pieces along with a grid layout for the prototype which will be presented in class. The prototype will represent different game stages (beginning stances, some attack stance examples, etc.). Also, our artist has finished the beginning stances for our pixel art characters: See you next week! 72843 - Ricardo Coelho da Silva

Prototype idea conception

This week we focused our efforts on finishing our conceptual documents for the first development cycle. These were delivered tuesday night, after which we discussed how to do our low-fidelity prototypes. Since it is mainly a fighting game, focused on action and reflexes and not having a tactical component, we were a bit taken aback on how to proceed but, after talking with the teacher at the last lab he gave the idea to do a turn-based game with the same concepts as our game. As we devised, this would work a bit like a tactical rpg, like Final Fantasy Tactics, with a 2D grid showing the position of the characters and each attack being a different action the players can take. For now we will develop this idea and see as it turns out, if we can't proceed we will brainstorm another approach.

Characters concepts

So this week, our artist showed us one of the final concept drafts for the final look of our characters. They are as follows: Computer Engineer Civil Engineer Chemist Artist The characters will be converted to pixel-art but will mostly retain these concepts style. Stay tuned! 72843 - Ricardo Coelho da Silva

Origins of UniBRAWL!

Imagem
For this post we are going to talk about the origin of the idea for the game. We were talking about which genre of game we would like to make but we couldn't decide on one without also deciding on a premise for the game, which we found to be much more important. As such, we came up with the idea of over-the-top caricatures of university student stereotypes, like the informatic students that use glasses and buttoned-up shirts or the not-caring and crass civil engineering students, a university brawl!  It was also based on the brawls that the IST courses do nowadays with their freshmen vs other courses freshmen, with shouting matches, but in this case it would be full-fledged fighting, a brawl to determine which course is the best!   First draft of UniBRAWL We also decided on a Smash-like game instead of a full-fledged fighting game because we could integrate it into a single-player mode without changing the gameplay too much and it would be easier to balance and simpl...

Conceptual stage

This week we were busy with other projects but we still managed to discuss the design of the character roster.  Like previously stated, we are aiming at a "medium-res" style pixel art similar to this .gif from Marvel vs Capcom:   For the aesthetics we will want to have designs similar to those of our keynote presentation in class:   We also started preparing our Unity platform in order to begin working on the actual gameplay prototype. That's all for today! 72843 - Ricardo Coelho da Silva

Welcome to the UNIBRAWL! development blog

I have been an avid gamer for 20 years with a major preference for First Person Shooters (Quake and Unreal Tournament being my favorites). My first contact with game development was a simple game that was a project for the Computer Graphics course at IST and from there i went on to learn the basics of Unity and Unreal on my own. " Alexandre Poeira - Developer "Hi everybody! My name is Alexandre Poeira, I'm a masters student at IST in the areas of Intelligent Systems and Games. I've been playing games ever since I got my first PS1 when I was 6 years old and never stopped. I try to play a bit of everything, from FPS’s to puzzle-platformers to visual novels.
